Beginner Tips
Starting a new farm can be overwhelming. This guide covers the optimal early-game strategy, tool upgrades, processing machines, and a daily routine to maximize your progress in Year 1.
Early Game Money Route
Spring Year 1 - Getting Started
- Day 1: Plant all 15 parsnip seeds, clear farm, forage, introduce yourself to villagers
- Days 2-4: Fish at the mountain lake or ocean for early cash (most reliable income)
- Day 5: Buy Kale or Potato seeds with fishing profits (Kale is most profitable)
- Day 13: Buy as many Strawberry seeds as you can at Egg Festival
- Save 1 of each crop for bundles; ship the rest
- Target: 10,000-20,000g by end of Spring
Summer Year 1 - Scaling Up
- Day 1: Buy Blueberry seeds with all your money (they regrow!)
- Craft Quality Sprinklers (Iron Bar + Gold Bar + Quartz) to save watering time
- Start building first barn/coop for animal products
- Push mines to floor 80+ for gold ore
- Buy Red Cabbage seeds if available (bundle item, normally Year 2)
- Target: 50,000-100,000g by end of Summer
Fall Year 1 - Big Profits
- Day 1: Mass plant Cranberries (regrow) and some Pumpkins
- Build Kegs and Preserves Jars for processing
- Complete Vault bundles (42,500g) to unlock Desert
- Aim to finish Community Center (may need Year 2 for some items)
- Target: 100,000-200,000g by end of Fall
Winter Year 1 - Preparation
- No crops (unless Greenhouse unlocked) - focus on mining and fishing
- Upgrade all tools (no crops means no downtime from upgrades)
- Push mines to floor 120 for Skull Key
- Plan your Year 2 Greenhouse (Ancient Fruit or Starfruit)
- Build relationships for Spring wedding
Tool Upgrade Order
| Priority | Tool | Why | When |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Watering Can (Steel) | Water 3x5 area, saves huge time on crops | Day before rain (so you don't miss watering) |
| 2nd | Pickaxe (Steel) | Break harder rocks, mine faster | After reaching mine floor 40+ |
| 3rd | Axe (Steel) | Chop hardwood stumps on farm | When you need Hardwood |
| 4th | Hoe (Steel) | Till 3x5 area, useful for artifact spots | When convenient |
| 5th | Watering Can (Gold/Iridium) | Water 3x5/6x6 area | Before expanding farm greatly |
| 6th | Pickaxe (Gold/Iridium) | Break meteorites, Skull Cavern rocks | Before Skull Cavern runs |

Processing Machines
| Machine | Input | Output | Profit Boost | Priority |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keg | Fruit / Hops / Wheat | Wine / Pale Ale / Beer | 3x-6x value | Highest |
| Preserves Jar | Fruit / Vegetable | Jelly / Pickles | 2x + 50g | High |
| Oil Maker | Truffle | Truffle Oil (1,065g) | 2x truffle value | High (if pigs) |
| Cheese Press | Milk / Goat Milk | Cheese / Goat Cheese | 2x-3x milk value | Medium |
| Mayonnaise Machine | Egg | Mayonnaise | ~2x egg value | Medium |
| Loom | Wool | Cloth (470g) | 2x wool value | Low |
| Crystalarium | Any gem (one-time) | Copies gem forever | Infinite | Diamond or Jade |
Keg vs Preserves Jar Rule
- Kegs: Better for high-value fruits (Starfruit, Ancient Fruit, Melon). Wine = Base Price x 3
- Preserves Jars: Better for low-value crops (Hops exception). Jelly = Base Price x 2 + 50g
- Rule of thumb: If base price is above 50g, use Keg. Below 50g, use Preserves Jar
- Artisan profession: +40% to all artisan goods - always pick this at Farming Level 10
Optimal Daily Routine
Morning (6am - 9am)
- Check TV: Weather (tomorrow), Luck, Queen of Sauce (recipes), Tip
- Water crops (or let sprinklers handle it)
- Collect machine outputs (Kegs, Jars, Furnaces)
- Pet animals, collect eggs/milk
- Refill machines with new inputs
Midday (9am - 6pm)
- Lucky day: Mine (Skull Cavern or regular mines)
- Rainy day: Mine, fish for rain-exclusive fish, or upgrade tools
- Normal day: Fish, forage, work on farm buildings, socialize
- Visit Pierre's for seeds, Clint's for ores, or Robin's for buildings
- Give daily gifts to villagers you encounter
Evening (6pm - 12am)
- Fish at ocean for night fish (more valuable)
- Visit the Saloon for socializing (most villagers gather here)
- Process any remaining items in machines
- Organize chests and plan tomorrow
- Sleep by 12am-1am to avoid energy penalty next day
